The Annapurna Panorama trek links the foothill villages of the Annapurna region: Ulleri, Ghorepani, Poon Hill, Tadapani and Ghandruk. It offers wide mountain views at modest altitude and takes five to seven days.
A loop built around views
The Annapurna Panorama trek is the name usually given to the loop that links Nayapul, Ghorepani, Poon Hill, Tadapani and Ghandruk. It takes five to seven days and never goes above about 3,210 m, yet it delivers a wider range of mountain scenery than many longer routes. From the ridge you can see Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri, the Annapurna massif, Machapuchare and Lamjung Himal in a single sweep, which is why it is also sold as a panorama trek.
How it differs from a simple Poon Hill trip
A basic Poon Hill trek often goes up and down the same trail, whereas the panorama loop returns by a different route. You pass through Gurung and Magar villages on the way up and through Tadapani and Ghandruk on the way down. The diversity of forest, terrace and village life makes it feel like a complete journey even though it is short.
The forests
Between Ghorepani and Tadapani the trail goes through some of the finest rhododendron forest in Nepal. In spring it is ablaze with colour. In other seasons it is a mossy, dripping woodland with orchids, ferns and many birds. Patches of bamboo and oak add variety.
People and culture
The villages are Gurung and Magar. Terrace farming, millet beer, shaman rituals and army service all shape local life. Ghandruk has a museum of Gurung culture and is a good place to learn about traditions.
Who it suits
Fit beginners, couples and families with older children, and anyone with a week to spare. Altitude is mild and the lodges are well spaced.
