How hard is the Annapurna Panorama trek?

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The Annapurna Panorama trek is easy to moderate. Days are four to seven hours with long staircases, and the high point is about 3,210 m.

Moderate, with long stairs and some steep descents

The Annapurna Panorama trek is not technical, and altitude is mild. The challenge is the repeated ascent and descent on stone stairs, particularly on the first two days and the descent from Tadapani to Ghandruk.

Daily effort

Four to seven hours of walking per day. Day two is the longest because of the climb from Tikhedhunga to Ghorepani. The route from Tadapani to Ghandruk is mostly downhill, which tires the knees.

Altitude

Mild. The high point is Poon Hill at about 3,210 m, and a slight headache is the most you are likely to feel. Drink plenty of water.

Fitness

Regular walking or climbing stairs in the weeks before the trip helps. Poles are useful.

Training and gear

Walk uphill for an hour or two several times a week for a month before the trip, and include stair climbing. Sturdy boots, poles, a rain jacket and a warm layer are the key items. A small first-aid kit with blister plasters is wise.

Who needs extra care

People with knee problems should take extra care on descents. Children under ten may find the long stairs tiring. Older travellers can walk the route slowly with an additional rest day.

Day-by-day difficulty

Day one is gentle. Day two is the hardest because of the climb to Ghorepani. Day three has the early start but is mostly level or downhill. Day four descends steeply to Ghandruk. Day five is a final descent to the road. Plan your effort accordingly.

What to do about altitude

The highest point is under 3,300 m, so altitude is usually not a problem. Drink water and ascend slowly. If you have a persistent headache, stay at Ghorepani an extra night.

Safety

Weather can change quickly, so carry a rain jacket and warm layers. See the season guide.
