Australian Camp: height, views and why it is popular

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Australian Camp is a hill clearing at about 2,060 m above the Pokhara valley. It is a popular short overnight trek with sunrise views of the Annapurna range and Machapuchare, and suits beginners and families.

The easiest mountain view near Pokhara

Australian Camp is a grassy ridge at about 2,060 m above the village of Dhampus, a short drive west of Pokhara. It was named after Australian trekkers who camped here in the 1960s, and the name stuck. Today it is a small cluster of lodges with an open campsite, and it offers a wide view of the Annapurna range, Machapuchare, Dhaulagiri and Lamjung Himal on clear mornings. It needs only one or two days, which makes it a rare chance to sleep in the hills when time is short.

What you see

The skyline runs from Dhaulagiri in the west to Annapurna South and the sharp pyramid of Machapuchare, with Pokhara and Phewa Lake shining in the valley far below. The sunrise lights the summits gold, then pink, then white, and the valley fills with mist. Photographers value it because the foreground of terraces, forest and prayer flags adds depth.

The setting and village life

The path climbs through forest and past small farms where Gurung and Brahmin families grow millet, maize and vegetables. The climate is mild, and the air in the early morning is pleasantly cool. Lodges are family run, offering simple rooms, hot meals and tea on the terrace.

Who it suits

Families with children, older travellers, beginners and people recovering from a long flight. It is also a good way to test your boots and your fitness before a longer trek.

How it connects

The route links with the Panchase trek and the longer Annapurna foothill trails. See the itinerary and the season guide.
