The best view of Cho Oyu from Nepal is from Gokyo and from Gokyo Ri, at about 5,350 m. The mountain stands across the Ngozumpa Glacier, and on clear mornings it fills the horizon. The Gokyo lakes trek is the usual way to see it.
The Gokyo valley
As you climb the valley from Machhermo, Cho Oyu comes into view across the glacier. By Gokyo village it is an immense wall of white.
Gokyo Ri
The viewpoint above Gokyo is the best place to see it, along with Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. Start before dawn for the light.
The fifth lake and beyond
A walk up the valley beyond the lakes gives closer views, with a clear look at the icefall. Ask your guide which side trips are safe.
Timing
Mornings are clearest. Autumn and spring have the best visibility.
A longer view
Beyond the fifth lake, the trail leads towards the Cho Oyu base camp area on the Nepal side, but conditions are demanding and not a standard trek. Ask your guide before going beyond the lakes.
Photography tips
Use a wide lens for the glacier and lakes, and a longer lens for the mountain face. Keep batteries warm, as cold drains them.
