Damodar Kunda: facts, pilgrimage meaning and what to expect

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Damodar Kunda is a group of high lakes in the Damodar Himal, in the far north of Mustang, near the Tibetan border. It is a remote pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists, and it is one of the most demanding journeys in the Mustang region. Reaching it takes a long trek through the restricted area of Upper Mustang, high camps and days far from any road.

Key facts

Use the numbers below to plan, not to measure. Maps, watches and lodge boards rarely agree to the metre.

  • Height: reported at roughly 4,900 to 5,200 m depending on source and which lake is measured.
  • Location: Damodar Himal, northern Mustang, in the Upper Mustang restricted area.
  • Trip length: long itineraries run around 20 days or more, including travel.
  • Style: a mix of lodges and wilderness camping; facilities are limited.
  • Permits: Upper Mustang restricted-area permit plus ACAP and TIMS arranged through an agency.

Pilgrimage meaning

The lakes are regarded as sacred, and bathing is believed by pilgrims to cleanse sins. Pilgrims commonly visit at the time of the August full moon festival, and the site is also respected in local Buddhist belief. If you visit in that period, expect pilgrims and follow local etiquette.

A different kind of trek

This is not a teahouse comfort trek. Itineraries typically pass through Lo Manthang, then north and east through remote high country, with nights in simple lodges or tents. Days can be long and weather unpredictable.

Who it suits

  • Experienced high-altitude trekkers with several weeks available.
  • Pilgrims or culture-focused travellers who accept basic conditions.
  • Walkers who want remoteness over comfort.

Who should not go

  • First-time trekkers.
  • Anyone short of time or without flexibility.
  • Trekkers with a history of serious altitude illness.

The landscape

North of Lo Manthang the land climbs into the Damodar Himal, a cold, high region of ridges, moraines and glacial lakes, with views toward Tibet. Vegetation is sparse. Yak herders use the high pastures in summer. The lakes lie in a stark, silent basin, and visitors often describe the experience as austere and moving.

Spiritual significance

For pilgrims, a visit to Damodar Kunda is an act of devotion and, for some, a lifelong ambition. Buddhists and Hindus treat the area with reverence. Visitors should behave quietly, avoid littering and refrain from bathing without understanding local customs.

Preparing mentally

Expect long days, cold nights, simple food and limited comfort. The reward is remoteness and a sense of having travelled to the edge of the map. If that appeals, this is a trip to take seriously.
