If you choose to skip Kala Patthar, the plan changes in a useful way. You can sleep at lower altitude, rest more and descend earlier. Here is one way to do it.
Option 1: base camp, then down
Altitudes and walking times on this page are approximate and differ a little between maps, GPS devices and lodges. Treat them as planning figures, not survey data.
- Lobuche (about 4,910 m) to Gorak Shep (about 5,164 m), a short walk.
- Lunch at Gorak Shep, then walk to base camp (about 5,364 m) and back.
- Sleep at Gorak Shep.
- Early next morning, start down to Pheriche (about 4,371 m).
Option 2: no night at Gorak Shep
Walk from Lobuche straight to base camp via Gorak Shep, then descend the same day to Lobuche or on to Pheriche. A long day, around 9 hours, but it avoids a night at 5,164 m.
Option 3: early helicopter
Walk up to base camp, spend the night at Gorak Shep and take a helicopter back in the morning. See helicopter return.
What to do with the saved time
- Rest and rehydrate.
- Visit the memorial cairns near Dughla.
- Allow extra time on the descent.
- Keep a spare day for weather.
Health note
Skipping Kala Patthar is a good idea if symptoms are rising. Do not go higher; follow the continue or stop guide.
Gear for the day
- Wind shell, warm hat and gloves.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Water and snacks.
- A headlamp if you start before sunrise.
What base camp is like
Outside the climbing season it is a field of rocks, ice and prayer flags, with a small marker. In April and May it is full of expedition tents. Behave respectfully: do not enter climbers’ camps without an invitation and follow your guide’s advice on where to walk.
Common questions
Can I skip Kala Patthar and still reach base camp?
Yes. They are two separate walks from Gorak Shep.
Do I need to sleep at Gorak Shep?
Not always. Some plans return to Lobuche or Pheriche the same day, but the day is long.
Is it a failure not to climb it?
No. Base camp is the goal. Kala Patthar is optional.
