The best months for Ghorepani are March to May and October to November. The rhododendron bloom peaks in March and April, and winter is cold at the village.
Good views need clear mornings
The reason to hike to Ghorepani is the sunrise view, and that depends on weather. The best windows are the dry seasons, with a bonus for the spring bloom.
Spring: March to May
Peak rhododendron bloom is generally late March to mid April. Days are warm in the valleys, the mornings are often clear and the forest is at its most beautiful. Haze builds from May, so far peaks look softer.
Autumn: October and November
The clearest sky of the year follows the monsoon, and the horizon is sharp. This is also the busiest time, so lodges fill and Poon Hill is crowded at dawn. Book in advance.
Winter: December to February
Cold nights at Ghorepani, often below freezing, with snow possible on the ridge. Mornings are often brilliantly clear, and there are far fewer people. Bring a warm jacket, gloves and a hat.
Monsoon: June to September
Heavy rain, leeches and cloud mean few views, and the stone steps are slippery. Not recommended unless you accept the conditions.
Cold at Poon Hill
Poon Hill is exposed to wind, so temperatures at sunrise can be well below freezing in winter and near freezing in spring and autumn. Bring a down jacket, a warm hat, gloves and a thermos. Many people underestimate the cold and regret it.
Flowers and festivals
Rhododendrons bloom between March and April, and the Gurung community celebrates the Tihar festival in autumn. Visiting during a festival gives a chance to see traditional dances.
How to choose
For flowers choose early April. For clear views choose late October to early December. For quiet choose February. Read the difficulty guide before you go.
