Almost everyone reaches the Gokyo Lakes by flying to Lukla and walking via Namche Bazaar. Weather decides whether flights go, so a buffer day at both ends is part of the plan.
Kathmandu to Lukla
The flight takes about 30 to 40 minutes and departs early in the morning. In busy months some flights operate from Ramechhap, which adds a long road transfer from Kathmandu. Baggage limits are strict, so pack a soft duffel and leave extras at your hotel in the city.
Lukla to Namche
The walk to Namche takes two days, with a night at Phakding or Monjo. The path follows the Dudh Kosi, crossing suspension bridges and climbing to Namche at about 3,440 m. The second day includes a long final ascent that is the first real test of the trek.
Namche to Gokyo
From Namche the trail goes through Dole and Machhermo to Gokyo along the Dudh Kosi valley, rising to about 4,790 m. It is quieter than the Everest base camp trail and reaches a chain of turquoise lakes. See the day-by-day itinerary.
Returning
Most trekkers return to Namche and Lukla, retracing their steps. Others cross Renjo La or Cho La for a longer circuit. Helicopter evacuations and charter flights exist but are expensive and also weather dependent, so do not count on them for schedule recovery.
What to carry on the flight
Wear your boots on the plane and carry a small day pack with valuables, medicines and a warm layer. The Lukla runway is short, and aircraft are small, so check-in bags are limited. Pack heavier gear in the duffel and keep anything you cannot replace in your hand baggage.
Buffer days
Add at least one spare day in Kathmandu after the return flight. If you miss a flight it can take a day or two to clear the queue. See the logistics answers for more.
Planning the return
Some trekkers fly out of Lukla after Gokyo, others return down the valley. Weather can disrupt flights, so keep a spare day before your onward travel.
A common route
Fly to Lukla, then follow the main trail to Namche, branching to Gokyo via Dole, Machhermo and Gokyo. The route climbs gradually and offers good acclimatisation. Plan for six to eight days to reach Gokyo and add rest days.
Weather and flights
Lukla flights depend on weather and may be rescheduled. Keep a spare day and consider the Ramechhap route in busy seasons.
