Himlung Himal climbing itinerary

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

A Himlung Himal expedition usually takes four weeks. The first week is the approach to Nar and Phu, then the party sets base camp, acclimatises and fixes higher camps before a summit attempt.

A month-long expedition

The Himlung Himal climb is usually planned over about 28 to 30 days from Kathmandu. This allows for a gradual approach, acclimatisation on the way, a summit push and some spare days. Heights and timings are approximate.

Days 1 to 7: approach

Drive to Besisahar and Koto, then trek to Dharamsala, Kyang and Phu or Nar Phedi, passing stone villages and canyons. Each day gains height gradually, and the early sections are low and warm.

Days 8 to 10: Nar and Phu region

Spend nights at villages like Phu or Nar, exploring monasteries and adjusting to altitude. This stage is an important acclimatisation period.

Days 11 to 14: base camp

Walk to Himlung base camp at about 4,900 m, set up camp and rest. Short acclimatisation climbs follow.

Days 15 to 22: higher camps and summit

The route climbs through camps on snow and glacier. Summit day starts in the early morning and lasts ten or more hours.

Days 23 to 30: return

Return to base camp and trek out by the same route, then drive to Kathmandu. Reserve days cover weather and delays.

Acclimatisation approach

The route is designed so that you reach base camp after a gradual rise and several nights above 3,500 m. At base camp, the team performs acclimatisation climbs to a lower camp and returns to sleep. After a rest, the group goes up to the higher camps in stages, sleeping at each. This approach reduces the risk of altitude illness.

Cultural stops on the approach

The Nar Phu valley has stone villages, monasteries and mani walls. The people follow a Tibetan Buddhist tradition, and the architecture resembles that of Tibet. Visit the monasteries with respect and ask before taking photographs.

Common questions
