Kagbeni lodges, food and practical tips

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Kagbeni has a good range of lodges for its size, many in old-style buildings with courtyards.

Lodges

Expect simple to comfortable rooms, some with attached bathrooms. In peak season, book ahead.

Food

Dal bhat, apple pie, noodles and Tibetan-style bread are common. Apple brandy is a local product, best enjoyed in moderation.

Wind and dust

Afternoon wind is strong and dusty. Carry a buff, sunglasses and lip balm.

One night or two

One night is enough for a stop on the Jomsom to Muktinath route. A second night gives time to explore and to prepare for Upper Mustang.

Etiquette

Ask before photographing people and religious places. Dress modestly in the monastery.

What a typical evening looks like

Evenings in Kagbeni are quiet. Travellers gather in dining rooms, share stories and play cards. Guides discuss plans for the next day. Dinner is early, often around 6:30, and most people are asleep by 9. If you want to see stars, step outside for a few minutes; the sky at this altitude is spectacular on clear nights.

Souvenirs and shopping

Small shops sell Tibetan-style crafts, jewellery, prayer flags, dried apples and apple brandy. Buy local products and bargain gently. Avoid items made from endangered species.

Health tips

Dust and wind can irritate eyes and throats. Carry eye drops, lip balm and throat lozenges. Wash hands often, and drink only treated water.

Local foods to try

  • Apple pie and apple crumble, a house speciality in the valley.
  • Thakali-style dal bhat with several side dishes.
  • Tibetan bread and butter tea (an acquired taste).
  • Buckwheat pancakes in the morning.
  • Dried apples and apple jam to take with you.

Responsible visiting

Kagbeni is small. Keep noise down in the evening, stay on paths between fields, avoid walking through crops and ask before photographing people.

Common questions

Is there a hot shower in Kagbeni?

In many lodges, for a fee.

Can I charge my phone?

Usually yes.

Is Kagbeni crowded?

Autumn is busy. Spring and winter are quieter.

Practical notes

Kagbeni is an oasis of barley fields and apple orchards in a dry valley. Wind rises in the afternoon, so start walks early. Carry cash and sun protection.
