Best time to visit Lo Manthang: Tiji and the seasons

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Lo Manthang lies in the rain shadow, which gives it a longer window than most Himalayan destinations, with Tiji as a special draw.

Spring and autumn

The best weather, with stable skies and manageable temperatures. Spring includes Tiji in many years.

Tiji festival

Tiji is a three-day Buddhist festival held in spring, with masked dances. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so check each year. See Tiji festival planning.

Monsoon

Lighter rain than elsewhere, though roads can be affected and cloud may obscure views.

Winter

Very cold, with many lodges closed and many residents moving to lower altitudes.

Planning around Tiji

If you want to see Tiji, book early and plan arrival a day or two before. Lodges fill quickly, and prices rise. The festival can be crowded, and some visitors prefer to avoid it for a quieter experience. Either choice is valid; just decide with open eyes.

Weather and daylight

Spring has longer days but strong wind; autumn has stable weather and shorter days. Plan your daily walking to avoid the afternoon wind.

Winter visits

Visiting in winter is possible for the well-prepared, but lodges are closed and the cold is severe. Many local people migrate to lower altitudes, so the city is quiet.

A seasonal summary

  • March and April: cold at dawn, strong wind, Tiji in some years.
  • May: warmer, dusty, longer days.
  • June to August: rain shadow means less rain, but roads and flights can be affected.
  • September to November: clear skies, harvest, comfortable days.
  • December to February: severe cold; many lodges closed.

A note on the Tiji festival

In spring the walled city may hold the Tiji festival, with masked dances in the old square. It draws visitors and raises prices, so book early and confirm dates with your operator, since they follow the lunar calendar.

Wind in the afternoon

Afternoon winds are strong most seasons. Plan walks in the morning and enjoy the town’s walls and monasteries in the evening.
