The best time for Lower Dolpo is May to early October. The region is in the rain shadow, so summer is usable, but snow can block the passes in April and late autumn.
A rain-shadow region with a wide window
Lower Dolpo lies behind the great range, so the monsoon is milder here. The window for passes is long, but the shoulder seasons are cold.
Late spring and summer
From late May to September the passes are usually open and the barley is green. Showers happen, but they are lighter than in the hills to the south.
Autumn
September and October bring clear skies and golden fields. Early snow can close the passes by November.
Spring
April and early May have snow on the passes, so the route is hard and cold.
Winter
Heavy snow closes everything. Not recommended.
What each month feels like
June has fresh green pastures and some rain. July and August have the warmest days. September has golden barley and clear skies. October brings the first snow on the passes. Planning a trip in September offers the most stable weather.
Weather risks
Snow can fall on the passes even in summer, and a delay of a day or two is possible. Cold nights above 4,000 m call for a warm sleeping bag rated to minus ten.
Why July and August can work
Dolpo sits behind the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, which block much of the monsoon rain. That is why the trek can be done in mid summer while the rest of Nepal is wet. Showers do occur, and cloud can obscure views, but conditions are often drier than expected. The pastures are green, flowers bloom and herders move to high summer camps.
Shoulder seasons
In May and early June, late snow can still lie on the passes. In October, early winter storms may arrive. Always allow a few extra days to wait out the weather.
Choosing
July to September is the safest window. See the difficulty guide.
