How hard is the Lower Dolpo trek?

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Lower Dolpo is demanding. Several passes lie above 5,000 m, camps are at high altitude and help is far away, but the route is less restricted than Upper Dolpo.

Strenuous, but shorter than Upper Dolpo

The route is long and remote, with multiple passes above 5,000 m. It is harder than Phoksundo Lake alone and easier than Upper Dolpo.

Altitude

Several nights are above 4,000 m and passes exceed 5,000 m. Acclimatisation days are built in.

Terrain

Rough trails, steep scree and river crossings. Long days of six to nine hours are normal.

Facilities

Camping is the norm. Basic village lodges exist in a few places.

A typical high pass day

You start before dawn, climb on scree and snow for four to five hours, reach the pass in late morning, rest briefly, then descend for another three hours. The wind at the top can be strong, so keep a windproof jacket handy. Poles help a lot.

Preparation

Train for at least three months with long hikes and altitude practice if possible. Previous multi-day high trekking is strongly recommended. Insurance must cover helicopter evacuation.

The long days and what they feel like

The trek is a succession of long days at altitude. A normal day begins before dawn with tea, a climb to a pass or ridge by late morning, a descent through scree and a camp in the afternoon. You will cross rivers on makeshift bridges and traverse steep slopes. Trails are rough and sometimes disappear on stone. The weather can be sunny in the morning and stormy by afternoon.

Managing the altitude

Several camps lie above 4,000 m, and passes exceed 5,000 m. The crew plans extra nights at key points, but you still need to listen to your body. Eat well, drink at least three litres a day, and report headaches early. Descend if symptoms worsen.

Who should go

Experienced trekkers. See permits and logistics.

Common questions

  • How many passes? Usually two or three above 5,000 m.
  • Can I use lodges? Mostly camping, with a few simple local lodges.
  • Is it harder than Phoksundo? Yes. It is longer, higher and more remote.
