Mount Machapuchare in the Annapurna region
Season and Weather

Best time to see Machapuchare

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The clearest views of Machapuchare come from October to April. Spring has some haze, and the monsoon often hides the peak behind cloud.

Visibility depends on the sky

Machapuchare is easy to see in clear weather and invisible in cloud. The best seasons are the dry ones.

Winter: November to February

The clearest air of the year, with snow-covered peaks and sharp mornings.

Spring: March to May

Warm weather with a hazy afternoon horizon. Mornings are still clear.

Autumn: October and November

Excellent clarity after the monsoon, with the busiest viewpoints.

Monsoon: June to September

Cloud covers the mountain for most days. A rare clear morning can be spectacular.

Seasonal patterns

In the dry season the sky is clear until mid morning. In the pre-monsoon, haze rises in the afternoon, and in the monsoon thick cloud covers the mountain for most of the day. Short clear gaps appear at dawn on some days.

Planning around weather

If the view matters, allow two or three mornings in Pokhara rather than one. A single cloudy morning does not mean the mountain is permanently hidden.

Hour by hour

Morning is the time to look. Before sunrise the sky is dark and the mountain is a silhouette. As the sun rises, the summit catches light first and glows orange, then pink, before turning white. Within an hour the valley fills with light and by mid morning haze or cloud often starts to build. By afternoon the mountain may be completely hidden. For this reason a single early start is better than a late arrival.

Choosing your base

Staying overnight on a ridge such as Sarangkot, Australian Camp or Dhampus gives you the best chance. You can wake in the dark, walk a few minutes to the viewpoint and watch the entire sunrise. If you stay in lakeside Pokhara, a taxi to Sarangkot takes about twenty minutes in the early morning.

Common questions

  • Can I see it from Pokhara? Yes, on clear mornings from the lakeside and Sarangkot.
  • Is it visible in the monsoon? Rarely.
  • Best viewpoint for photos? Sarangkot at sunrise.

Tip

Plan to be at a viewpoint before sunrise. See the viewpoint guide.
