How difficult is the Mardi Himal trek?

3 min read

The Mardi Himal trek is moderate. It does not need technical skills, but it climbs steadily through forest to a high, exposed ridge, with basic lodges and cold nights. The View Point at about 4,200 m is higher than Poon Hill and similar to Annapurna Base Camp, but the trek is much shorter, so altitude gain is quick.

What makes it demanding

The trail climbs almost every day, often steeply. The forest sections are humid and slippery in wet weather. Above High Camp the ridge is narrow and windy, and the last climb to the View Point is steep. The descent is hard on knees. Lodges are basic, with few comforts, and facilities become simpler with height.

What makes it manageable

The distances are short, usually four to six hours of walking a day. The trail is clear, there are lodges every few hours and there is no need for technical equipment. It is possible to turn back at any point if you feel unwell, and the trail is quieter than many popular routes.

Altitude considerations

High Camp is at about 3,550 m and the View Point at about 4,200 m. The gain is quick, so you should walk slowly and drink plenty of water. Headaches and poor sleep are common. If symptoms worsen, descend. Do not push to the View Point if you feel unwell.

How to prepare

  • Walk uphill with a pack three times a week for two months.
  • Train on stairs to strengthen legs and knees.
  • Practise long days of five to six hours so the schedule feels natural.
  • Test your boots and layers before you travel.

Who it suits

Active beginners, hikers who want a quieter route, and those with limited time. It is a good second trek after Poon Hill. It is less suitable for people who dislike basic lodges, cold nights or steep climbs.

Honest expectations

You will climb for most of the first three days, sleep in a simple lodge, feel cold at night and get a clear view only if the weather cooperates. On a good morning, however, the view of Machhapuchhre is among the best on any short trek in Nepal.

Comparing effort with other treks

Mardi Himal is harder than Poon Hill because of the steeper climbs, the higher altitude and the simpler lodges. It is easier than Annapurna Base Camp because it is shorter and has no long staircase sequences. For many people it sits comfortably in the middle, which makes it a good second trek.

Common difficulties

  • Tired legs from several days of steady uphill.
  • Cold nights with limited heating.
  • Strong wind on the ridge.
  • Limited choice of food at higher lodges.

How to make it easier

Hire a porter, bring trekking poles, use a good sleeping bag and eat well at every opportunity. Keep a positive attitude, and remember that the discomfort is short and the views are long-lasting.
