Mardi Himal: trek solo, with a partner or in a group?

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Mardi Himal is popular with independent trekkers, but the ridge is exposed and weather changes quickly. A guide or a group adds safety, especially on the final section to the high viewpoint.

Going solo

The trail is clear, lodges are frequent and many trekkers walk it independently. Risks are bad weather, fog on the ridge and being alone if you fall ill. Tell your lodge your plan and carry warm clothing. See solo trekking and safety.

Going as a pair

A partner makes the ridge safer. Agree on a turnaround time on the final climb. Stay together in fog and do not split up on the ridge.

Hiring a guide

A guide knows lodges, weather and shortcuts. A porter helps if you carry camera gear. Costs are modest and local families benefit.

Group treks

Groups share costs and meals. The pace may be slower, which helps acclimatisation. Choose groups with experienced leaders and a clear plan for bad weather.

Safety on the ridge

The upper ridge is narrow, and a wrong step in fog can be serious. Walk in a group of at least two and stay behind the guide. Turn around if visibility is poor or if the wind rises. The viewpoint is not worth a risk, and the view is just as good the next morning.

Etiquette in lodges

Lodges are small and busy in October and April. Share tables, follow the lodge rules for charging and switch off lights at night. Tipping is welcome for guides and porters at the end of the trek.

Our advice

First-time trekkers should hire a guide. Experienced walkers may go solo in clear seasons and should avoid the final ridge in poor visibility.

When going with a partner suits you

Two trekkers can share a room, split a guide and look after each other. Stay together and keep a pace that suits both.

Lodge manners on the ridge

Rooms are close, walls are thin and quiet after early evening is courteous. Pack light and keep gear tidy.

When to hire a guide

The path is clear on most days but rain, mist or snow can hide it. A guide knows lodge availability and handles route choices. Solo trekkers should leave details with their lodge.
