Mesokanto La: height, location and why trekkers choose it

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Mesokanto La is a high pass in the Annapurna region that connects the Tilicho Lake area with the dry Kali Gandaki valley on the Jomsom side. It offers a way to leave the Manang valley without crossing Thorong La, and it is for well-prepared trekkers who want a quieter, harder alternative.

Key facts

Distances and heights are rounded, and a slow day or a snowfall can change the times.

  • Height: about 5,099 m.
  • Connects: the Tilicho Base Camp area to the Jomsom side (Kali Gandaki valley).
  • Character: remote, exposed, high and long, with few facilities.
  • Rules: the Tilicho and Mesokanto route requires a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card, plus the ACAP entry permit.

Where it fits

Most trekkers who visit Tilicho return to Manang. The Mesokanto La crossing is the alternative for people who want to cross to Jomsom instead. See our Tilicho-to-Jomsom crossing guide for the short summary.

Who it suits

  • Strong, acclimatised trekkers who completed the Tilicho Lake day without difficulty.
  • Groups with a flexible schedule and a good guide.
  • Walkers who want solitude over comfort.

Who it does not suit

  • First-time high-altitude trekkers.
  • Anyone short of days or with a fixed return flight.
  • Trekkers with a history of altitude illness.

Compared with Thorong La

Thorong La is higher at about 5,416 m but has lodges on both sides, heavy traffic and a clear path. Mesokanto La is lower but more remote, with few lodges and more variable conditions. See Mesokanto La vs Thorong La.

The landscape on the way

Beyond Tilicho Base Camp the terrain is bare, cold and open: scree slopes, moraine, high pasture and wide views of peaks that few trekkers see up close. There are no villages. The sense of scale and emptiness is the main attraction, and also the main risk, because there is nothing to fall back on if conditions change.

How the crossing is usually arranged

Operators who offer the crossing build it as an extension of a Tilicho trek, with additional porters or pack animals, extra food and fuel, and a guide who has crossed before. Costs are higher than for a standard Circuit because of the added days, crew and logistics. Ask for a clear description of where you will sleep on each night and what happens if the pass is closed.

Questions to ask before you commit

  • Has your guide crossed Mesokanto La this season, and when?
  • What is the plan if the pass is snowed in or the weather is poor?
  • Where exactly do we sleep on the far side, and is food guaranteed?
  • How are porters equipped and insured for this section?
  • What is the cost difference compared with returning to Manang?
