Mesokanto La is never a stand-alone trek. It is the second half of a Tilicho journey that begins in Manang. The plan below shows a safe order of days.
The outline
Figures are approximate, and small differences between maps and your own watch are normal.
- Manang (about 3,540 m): two nights, with a rest-day hike.
- Khangsar (about 3,734 m).
- Shree Kharka (about 4,050 m).
- Tilicho Base Camp (about 4,150 m).
- Tilicho Lake and back to base camp, a long day.
- Spare day at base camp if needed.
- Mesokanto La (about 5,099 m) and descent toward Jomsom, 9 to 12 hours, sometimes split with a high camp.
- Jomsom (about 2,720 m) and onward by road or air.
Why the spare day matters
A weather window is a requirement for the pass. Keep at least one day in hand after the lake day. If the weather is poor, you can wait; if it stays bad, you can retreat to Manang.
Camp or lodge
Facilities beyond Tilicho Base Camp are sparse. Some itineraries use a basic lodge or tented camp on the Jomsom side. Ask your operator exactly where you will sleep and how food and water are arranged.
After the pass
The descent is long and dry, finishing in the Kali Gandaki valley. Plan an easy next day: Jomsom, Marpha or a flight to Pokhara. See Jomsom flights and wind.
Package context
Our Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake package returns to Manang and crosses Thorong La. A Mesokanto La exit is a custom variation; send an enquiry with your dates.
Pacing the days before the pass
The days between Manang and Tilicho Base Camp matter as much as the crossing itself. Resist the temptation to shorten them. Each short day lets your body adapt and also keeps energy in reserve. If you arrive at the base camp tired, with a headache or poor sleep, the pass is not the right choice, and returning to Manang is a perfectly good decision.
The lake day and the pass day
The lake day is a demanding round trip on its own, and some groups prefer to do it as a separate day with a rest day before the pass. Others cross the pass directly from the base camp without visiting the lake. Either approach can work; the best choice depends on weather, group fitness and how much margin you have in the schedule.
Arriving on the Jomsom side
The descent toward the Kali Gandaki valley is long and dry. Expect strong wind in the afternoon, dust, and a sharp change in scenery from alpine to desert. Many groups sleep at a basic lodge or camp on the lower slopes, then walk to Jomsom or Marpha the next day. Plan a gentle day afterwards and enjoy the apple pie.
