North Annapurna Base Camp: solo, pair or group?

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Go with a licensed guide and a camping crew, whether you are solo, a pair or a group. The route is remote, mostly camping and has no lodges above the start, so cost sharing and a team make it safer and cheaper per person.

Can I go alone?

Not sensibly. The trail is lightly used, signs are few, camps need setting up and rescue is slow. Operators describe a guide as required, and a solo traveller still needs a crew.

Solo travellers

A solo trekker pays the full cost of guide, cook and camp equipment. Joining a group departure shares that cost and gives you company at the campsite.

Pairs and families

Two to four people is a comfortable size. You can share tents, and the guide can keep a close eye on everyone. Check the fitness of every member, since the pace follows the slowest.

Larger groups

Groups of up to a dozen are possible, but a bigger group needs more tents and staff and moves more slowly on steep ground. Smaller groups are better for a short, steep trek.

Questions to ask an operator

How many guides and porters, who carries the satellite phone, what is the plan if someone feels unwell, and what happens if the road is blocked. Clear answers signal a careful operator.

Etiquette

Leave no trace, carry out rubbish and respect local villagers. Ask before photographing people.

Group dynamics on a camping trek

Close quarters at camp make small irritations bigger. Agree simple rules: quiet after dark, tidy tents, shared jobs like fetching water, and no pushing someone beyond their limit. A calm group is safer, because people speak up about symptoms.

What happens if one person must turn back

In a group, a guide stays with the person who descends, or an assistant escorts them to the road. Ask how your operator handles this and whether extra costs apply. It is better to plan the answer before it is needed.

Costs when you share

Guide, cook, tents, transport and permits cost roughly the same for one traveller as for four. Splitting the bill is the main saving. Ask for a price for different group sizes.

Choosing companions

Match fitness and attitude. Talk about pace, turnaround rules and tent sharing before you commit. A group that agrees in advance is calmer at camp.

What a solo traveller should do

Join a scheduled departure if one exists, or ask the operator to match you with others. Share your plan with family, buy proper insurance and tell your guide about any health condition.

Plan it
