Nuptse climbing basics, season and permits

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Nuptse is a serious technical peak, not a trekking peak. It requires a climbing permit through a registered agency, strong mountaineering experience and a good team. Fees change, so confirm them when planning.

How climbs are organised

Nuptse is climbed by experienced teams with a base camp in the Khumbu, usually in the same area as Everest Base Camp. The usual route follows the glacier to a high camp on the ridge, with steep snow and ice climbing to the summit. Expeditions are small and independent.

Season and weather

Spring is the main season, from April to May, when winds are lighter. Autumn is cold and snowy. Weather windows are short and avalanche risk is a constant concern.

Permit system

Nuptse requires an expedition permit from the Ministry of Tourism through a registered agency. A royalty is charged per climber, and rules change from year to year. Confirm current terms with your agency.

Experience needed

Climbers should have extensive experience on technical routes at altitude, rope skills and strong teams. Previous 7,000 m and 8,000 m experience is recommended.

Costs and planning

Costs depend on size and support. Plan for permits, flights, base camp services, equipment and insurance that includes helicopter evacuation.

Typical expedition timeline

A Nuptse expedition usually lasts about six weeks. The first two weeks are the approach and acclimatisation, then two to three weeks are spent establishing camps and fixing ropes, followed by a summit push if the weather allows. Teams often use Everest Base Camp as their starting point and share facilities with other groups.

What to ask an operator

Ask about their experience on Nuptse, the number of Sherpa guides per client, the oxygen policy, the rescue plan and the cancellation policy. A responsible operator will be clear about the risks and about who is suitable.

Common questions

  • Is Nuptse a trekking peak? No, it needs an expedition permit.
  • Who arranges the permit? Your registered agency.
  • How many climbers go each year? Few. It is much quieter than Everest.

Technical reality

Nuptse, about 7,861 m, has a long ridge with several summits and demands advanced skills. Permits and expedition support are needed, so few climbers attempt it.
