Pheriche is a broad, windswept village on the valley floor below Dingboche, at about 4,371 m. Many trekkers pass through it on the way down from base camp, and some use it as an alternative to Dingboche on the way up. It is best known for its seasonal aid post.
Where it is
Altitudes and walking times on this page are approximate and differ a little between maps, GPS devices and lodges. Treat them as planning figures, not survey data.
Pheriche sits on the Khumbu valley route between Pangboche (about 3,930 m) and Dughla (about 4,620 m). Dingboche is a walk of roughly one to two hours away, across a low ridge. Both lie at similar height, about 4,371 m and about 4,410 m.
Pheriche or Dingboche on the way up
- Both are good for a rest day at around 4,400 m.
- Dingboche has more trails for acclimatisation hikes, such as Nangkartshang. See Dingboche hikes.
- Pheriche is colder in the afternoon because wind funnels down the valley, and has the aid post.
Pheriche on the way down
Pheriche is a common night after Kala Patthar. It is about 800 m lower than Gorak Shep, so sleep is usually better and headaches ease.
Lodges and food
Expect simple lodges, shared toilets and a dining room heated by a stove in the evening. Prices rise with altitude. See teahouse food and lodging.
Weather
Mornings are often clear; afternoons bring wind and cloud. Bring a windproof layer and a warm hat for the evening.
Questions people ask about Pheriche
- Is it warmer than Dingboche? Often colder in the afternoon wind.
- Is it good for photographs? Yes, for the valley and Taboche.
- Can I see Everest from Pheriche? Not from the village.
Why some guides prefer it on the way down
After base camp and Kala Patthar the body is tired. A night at about 800 m lower than Gorak Shep often brings relief from headaches. It is also a natural place to check how everyone is before the next descent.
