Pheriche has fewer day hikes than Dingboche, but a few short options help adapt to altitude. It also fits into an itinerary in more than one way.
Day hike ideas
Altitudes and walking times on this page are approximate and differ a little between maps, GPS devices and lodges. Treat them as planning figures, not survey data.
- Walk up the valley toward Dughla (about 4,620 m) and back.
- Climb the grassy slope above the village for a view of the Khumbu peaks.
- Walk to Dingboche and back by the other side of the valley.
Keep any rest-day hike to a modest height gain, ideally ending lower than you started the day before.
Plan A: Pheriche on the way down
Walk from Gorak Shep to Pheriche, about 5 to 6 hours. Next day, continue to Namche.
Plan B: Pheriche on the way up
From Tengboche, go via Pangboche to Pheriche instead of Dingboche. The night and next day stay similar to the standard plan.
Plan C: Pheriche as the acclimatisation base
Use Pheriche for the rest day, then walk to Lobuche. Choose this if you want the aid post or if Dingboche is busy.

Staying safe on rest-day hikes
Keep the hike to two or three hours, carry water and a windproof jacket, and return before the afternoon wind. Do not try to treat the rest day as a training session.
Adding Pheriche without adding days
Swapping Dingboche for Pheriche on the way up does not change the plan length, only the village. Ask us which fits your itinerary and group better.
