Phoksundo permits, flights and how to get there

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

You need a Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permit, and a trekking permit arranged through a registered agency. The only practical access is by air to Juphal via Nepalgunj. Fees change, so confirm them when you book.

Permits

Entering the park requires a Shey Phoksundo National Park permit. Treks that continue into Lower Dolpo need a restricted-area permit, and Upper Dolpo needs a separate one. Trekking insurance is a requirement for foreign trekkers. Fees are set by the government and change from time to time, so we confirm the current amounts with you rather than printing figures here.

Flights

Kathmandu to Nepalgunj takes around an hour. The onward flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal takes about 40 minutes. Both are small aircraft with strict baggage limits, usually around fifteen kilograms, so pack a duffel and leave surplus at the Kathmandu hotel. The return follows the same chain.

Delays and buffer days

Weather, especially wind and cloud in the afternoon, can ground flights. Build in at least one spare day, and book your international departure a day or two after the trek ends.

Guide and arrangements

The park rules favour guided trips, and the route has few lodges, so most operators supply a guide, porters and a cook for the camping sections. Lodges at Dunai, Ringmo and a few other villages are basic but adequate.

Money and supplies

Carry rupees; there is a bank in Dunai, but do not rely on it. Mobile signal is intermittent and electricity is solar-based in many places.

Packing for a small aircraft

Aircraft to Juphal have tight weight limits, so pack in a soft duffel, wear your boots on the plane and carry a small day pack as hand luggage. Put valuables and medication in the hand luggage. Leave surplus clothes at your Kathmandu hotel.

A note on food and lodging

Meals in Dunai and Ringmo are dal bhat, noodles, eggs and potatoes, with local barley bread in the upper villages. Vegetarian food is easy. Tea houses can run out of items late in the season, so carry a few snacks.
