Poon Hill: trek solo, with a partner or in a group?

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Poon Hill is one of the safest first treks to do independently, but a guide or group makes it easier for beginners, families and anyone worried about the stairs and the cold at sunrise.

Going solo

The trail is busy and well marked, lodges are close together and help is rarely far away. Solo trekkers should still tell their lodge their plans, carry a charged phone and start the sunrise climb with a head torch. In winter take care on icy steps.

Going as a pair or family

Walking in a pair adds safety and makes lodge choices easier. Families should plan short days and allow rest stops on the stairs.

Guide and porter

A guide adds local knowledge, books lodges in the busy season and keeps the group on schedule. A porter carries heavy bags. Both are affordable.

Group departures

Joining a group is convenient and economical. Check the pace and group size, and whether a rest day is included.

Pace for families and mixed groups

If your group includes children, older relatives or first-timers, plan shorter days and an extra night. A slow pace on the Ulleri stairs prevents blisters and tired knees. Agree on a rule that anyone can ask for a rest without needing to justify it.

What a guide adds

A guide knows the best lodges, can find rooms at busy times and reads the weather. He or she can also help with simple first aid. For a trek this short, a guide is a luxury for experienced trekkers and a real help for beginners.

Our advice

First-time trekkers will be happiest with a guide and a small group. Experienced walkers can go independently outside the peak season. See how hard Poon Hill is.

Where solo trekkers do well

Poon Hill is a busy, well-marked trail with plenty of lodges. Solo trekkers can manage, but a guide improves safety and knowledge of the area.

Making friends on the trail

Group departures and shared lodges make it easy to meet others. Evening common rooms are the social centre.

Trail etiquette

Lodges in Ghorepani fill quickly in autumn. Arrive early, keep voices low after dark and share tables politely. Group departures help you find a seat and a room.
