Rolwaling lies in the Gaurishankar Conservation Area, so you need conservation area and trekking permits arranged through an agency. Fees change, so confirm them when you book. The road from Kathmandu is long and rough.
Permits
The valley lies within the Gaurishankar Conservation Area, so you need its entry permit, and the Tashi Lapcha crossing needs further permits for the high pass. Because the route ends in the Sagarmatha National Park, those permits are also required. Rules and fees change, so we confirm them at booking.
Reaching the start
The road from Kathmandu to Gonggar through Dolakha takes seven to eight hours by jeep. The road can be damaged by rain. The trek begins on foot from Gonggar.
Ending the trek
After the pass you walk to Thame and Namche, then to Lukla, where you fly to Kathmandu. The Lukla flight is weather-dependent, so build in a spare day.
Logistics
Camping is the norm above Beding, so a cook, guide and porters are part of the trip. Lodges in Beding are basic.
Money and signal
Carry rupees; signal is absent in most of the valley.
A word on the road
The road to Gonggar has been improved but still has rough sections, and heavy rain can wash it out. Leave Kathmandu early and expect delays. Carry water, snacks and a warm layer for the drive.
Staying respectful in the valley
Rolwaling is a Sherpa homeland and a sacred valley. Ask before photographing people, walk clockwise around mani walls and do not leave rubbish. Guides will explain local customs.
Common questions
- Do I need a guide? A licensed guide is advised for the valley and normally required for a pass crossing.
- Is there mobile coverage? Only patchy signal near the lower villages. Expect none at Beding and above.
- Can I do it without camping? The Tsho Rolpa trek can use simple lodges. The Tashi Lapcha crossing needs camping.
