Almost every trekker faces the same decision on the last night before the pass: stop at Thorong Phedi or climb on to High Camp. It is a trade between a shorter pass day and a higher sleeping altitude.
The two options
Distances and heights are rounded, and a slow day or a snowfall can change the times.
- Thorong Phedi: about 4,450 m, at the base of the climb, with several lodges.
- High Camp: about 4,880 m, a steep 400 m climb above, with a few lodges.
Case for Thorong Phedi
- Lower sleeping altitude and better odds of a good night.
- A longer pass day, but you can leave earlier.
- An easier fallback: you can descend quickly if unwell.
Case for High Camp
- Shorter and less steep pass day: about 540 m of ascent instead of about 960 m.
- Slightly later start on the pass.
The costs are poorer sleep, colder nights and an extra 400 m of ascent the afternoon before.
A sensible rule
If you feel strong and slept well at Yak Kharka, you can consider High Camp. If you had any headache or poor sleep, stay at Phedi. Many guides prefer Phedi for most groups, and plan an early start.
Afternoon routine
Walk up to High Camp only after resting and eating, drink plenty, and go slowly. Avoid alcohol. At either site, pack your bag the night before and set out clothing.
What the lodges are like
Both sites have simple lodges with shared rooms, basic bathrooms and a dining room heated by a stove in the evening. Rooms are cold, sometimes below freezing, and sleep is often poor. Bring a warm sleeping bag, hat and thermal layers. Food is basic, usually dal bhat, noodles, soup and tea. Do not expect luxury; expect warmth and a hot meal.
Effects on the pass day
Sleeping at Thorong Phedi means a longer climb in the dark, with more time above 5,000 m. Sleeping at High Camp reduces the ascent but starts from a higher base. For most groups the difference is about an hour or two of walking. The more important factor is how well you sleep and how you feel in the morning.
A word on crowding
In peak season, both sites can be crowded, with beds in short supply. A guide who books ahead is valuable. If lodges are full, you may have to share a room or sleep in a dining room. Arrive early in the afternoon if you can.
Common questions
Which is safer, Thorong Phedi or High Camp?
Thorong Phedi, because it is lower, though the pass day is longer.
How much higher is High Camp?
About 400 m higher than Thorong Phedi.
Can I change my mind in the morning?
Yes. If you feel unwell, descend rather than push on.
