Tilicho Lake is a high-altitude site, so its season is narrower than the lower Circuit. Two windows work well: late September to November, and April to May. The details matter, especially wind, ice and landslides.
Autumn: late September to November
Autumn has the clearest skies and the most stable weather. October is the peak: settled days, dry trails and the best visibility. By mid to late November, nights are very cold and the lake may begin to freeze at the edges. Early snow can arrive at any time. Autumn is the busiest season, so lodge space near the lake is limited.
Spring: April to May
Spring is also popular, with longer days. In April the lake can still be covered by ice and snow, which is beautiful but changes the route and risk. By May, more of the lake is open, though afternoon clouds are common. Spring is also when rockfall risk is higher as snow melts.
Monsoon: June to early September
The area is in the rain shadow of the Annapurna range, so monsoon rain is lighter than on the south side. But the approach through lower Manang valley can be wet and landslide-prone, and cloud often hides the lake. Not recommended unless you are experienced and flexible.
Winter: December to March
Winter is very cold, with deep snow in the approaches and the risk of avalanches on slopes. Lodges at Shree Kharka and the base camp are usually closed. We do not recommend Tilicho in winter for a standard trek.
Wind and time of day
Whatever the season, wind builds as the day warms. The standard advice is to reach the lake in the morning and be heading down by late morning. Dress for a significant wind chill even on a sunny day.
Ice and appearance
A frozen lake is dramatic and quiet, but the colours are muted: white, grey and pale blue. A fully open lake in autumn looks deep blue-green. If photography matters to you, ask your guide about recent conditions before choosing dates.
Choosing your dates
- For reliability: mid-October to early November.
- For longer days and fewer trekkers: late April to mid-May.
- For flexibility: add a spare day to any schedule.
Autumn vs spring: a quick comparison
- Visibility: autumn is clearer; spring can be hazy.
- Ice: spring lake is often frozen or snow-covered; autumn lake is more open.
- Crowds: autumn is busiest; spring is quieter.
- Rockfall: risk can increase in spring as snow melts.
- Temperatures: both are cold at dawn; late autumn is the coldest.
What to do if conditions are poor
If the forecast is bad on your planned day, do not force it. Use the spare day, adjust the schedule, or accept that the lake may not be possible this time. Many trekkers get a second chance by waiting a day at the base lodge.
Common questions
When is the best month for Tilicho Lake?
October is usually the best for stable weather and clear views. Late April to May is a good alternative.
Is the lake always frozen?
No. It freezes partly or fully in cold months and may be open in autumn and late spring. Ask your guide about current conditions.
Can I go in winter?
It is not recommended for standard trekkers because of cold, snow and closed lodges.
