Mesokanto La: crossing from Tilicho to Jomsom

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The Mesokanto La, at about 5,099 m, is the pass that links the Tilicho area with the Jomsom side of the Kali Gandaki valley. It lets you skip the return to Manang and the Thorong La crossing, at the cost of a long, remote and demanding day. It is for experienced, well-acclimatised trekkers with a strong guide.

Where the pass sits

From Tilicho Base Camp, the route climbs onto high ground, passes near the lake and continues across high pasture and rocky terrain to the Mesokanto La. On the far side, the trail drops toward Jomsom through dry, open country. It is less used than the Thorong La route and has fewer facilities.

Heights and times here are rounded. A lodge sign or your guide's GPS may differ by a little.

What a typical crossing looks like

The crossing is usually done in one very long day or split with an overnight at a high camp. From the base lodge, it can take 9 to 12 hours to reach the lower side, depending on conditions and fitness. Many trekkers sleep at a lodge or camp on the Jomsom side, then continue to Jomsom the next day.

Why it is demanding

  • The altitude is above 5,000 m for several hours.
  • There is little shelter and almost no water along the way.
  • The route can be icy or snowy, depending on season.
  • Help is far away if something goes wrong.
  • The descent is long and tiring.

Who it suits

  • Trekkers who completed the lake day easily and feel strong.
  • Those with experience above 5,000 m.
  • Groups with a flexible schedule and a good guide.

If you have any doubt, return to Manang and cross Thorong La instead. It is a safer, better-supported route.

Logistics and rules

The Tilicho and Mesokanto route requires a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card. Plan food and water for a long day, and carry a warm layer, a headlamp and a first-aid kit. Make sure your porters are equipped and insured, and that your plan includes bad-weather options.

Comparing with Thorong La

Thorong La is lower at about 5,416 m but has lodges on both sides and a lot of traffic. Mesokanto La is lower in altitude at about 5,099 m but more remote and less supported. Most trekkers who want to include Tilicho return to Manang and then cross Thorong La. Read crossing Thorong La for comparison.

After the pass: Jomsom

Once in the Kali Gandaki valley, you can reach Jomsom, with its airport and shops. See getting to and from Jomsom for flights and road options.
