Getting to the Tilicho Peak: flights, roads and transfers

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Tilicho Peak is reached via Besisahar and Manang, followed by a trek to base camp near Tilicho Lake. Logistics are those of an expedition.

Kathmandu to Besisahar

The first leg is a drive of about six to seven hours along the Prithvi Highway and then north to Besisahar, the usual gateway to the Annapurna Circuit region. Besisahar sits at roughly 760 m, so you start the trip near the bottom of the altitude profile.

Besisahar to Manang by jeep

From Besisahar, jeeps follow the Marsyangdi valley via Chamje, Dharapani and Chame. The road is rough, narrow and sometimes closed by landslides. Allow a full day, or break the trip at Chame to ease the altitude gain. Manang is about 3,540 m.

Flying to Pokhara first

Some teams fly from Kathmandu to Pokhara and drive from there. It adds a night in a comfortable city but can save a long day on the highway. Weather can delay flights, so keep a spare day.

From Manang to Tilicho Base Camp

Most teams spend several nights around Manang for acclimatisation, then walk via Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp, about 4,150 m. Parts of the trail cross steep, landslide-prone slopes, so move steadily and follow your guide.

Moving to the peak base camp

From the lake side, the team establishes camps as the route requires. Porters and animals carry loads, and the team moves higher in stages with rest days between. Do not rush this part; it is where acclimatisation is won or lost.

Weather and road risks

After monsoon rain, slides can block the road for hours. In the autumn season, clear skies are the norm, but early snow can arrive in November. Ask your operator for the latest road report before you leave.

Return journey

After the climb, teams usually walk back to Manang and drive to Besisahar. Some continue over Thorong La to Muktinath and fly from Jomsom. Both options need spare days.

Insurance and communication

Make sure your insurance covers evacuation from Manang and above, and ask how the team communicates from base camp. A satellite phone or radio is the usual answer.

A realistic timeline

Day one is the drive to Besisahar or a flight to Pokhara. Day two is the jeep to Chame or Manang. Then come three to four nights around Manang and Khangsar for acclimatisation, with short hikes to a viewpoint above the village such as Gangapurna Lake or the Praken Gompa ridge. Moving to Tilicho Base Camp takes another day, and the climb needs about a week of rotations, rest and the summit push. Count at least 16 to 18 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu before spare days.

What to ask your operator about transport

Ask whether jeeps are private or shared, who covers the extra cost if a slide forces a night on the road, and whether the team uses a driver who knows the Marsyangdi road. A private vehicle gives you control over stops, which helps if anyone feels unwell. Confirm the departure time too: most teams leave Kathmandu between six and seven in the morning to reach Besisahar before the afternoon traffic.
