Yala Peak climbing itinerary, day by day

3 min read

Yala Peak is a Langtang trekking peak at about 5,500 m. Published heights vary slightly between sources, and a figure around 5,520 m is common. It is popular as a first Himalayan summit because the walk-in is gentle, the technical demands are modest and the Langtang valley is close to Kathmandu. A typical plan runs 11 to 14 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. The outline below shows the usual shape, but operators vary the stops, so use it to compare quotes rather than as a fixed script.

Days 1 and 2: Kathmandu to Syabrubesi and Lama Hotel

You drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, at about 1,550 m, which takes most of a day on a winding road. Day 2 follows the Langtang Khola upstream through oak, rhododendron and bamboo forest, past waterfalls and suspension bridges, to Lama Hotel at about 2,400 m. The climb is steady and humid in the lower forest, so start early and drink regularly.

Days 3 and 4: Langtang village and Kyanjin Gompa

The valley opens above the forest into yak pastures and stone villages. Day 3 reaches Langtang village at roughly 3,400 m, in view of Langtang Lirung. Day 4 continues to Kyanjin Gompa at about 3,870 m, a small village with a monastery, a cheese factory and lodges. Here you leave the standard trekking route and begin preparing for the climb.

Day 5: acclimatisation at Kyanjin

A rest day here is essential. Many groups walk up Kyanjin Ri at about 4,770 m or Tserko Ri, then return to sleep at Kyanjin. This is the most useful training session for the whole trip, because it shows how you cope with height and gives your guide a chance to check your health and pace.

Days 6 and 7: base camp and high camp

From Kyanjin the route climbs toward the Yala base area. Depending on the operator and conditions, groups use a base camp and sometimes a high camp, with tents, a camp crew and meals. You spend a night or two practising basic skills, such as walking in crampons, using an ascender on a fixed rope and moving as a roped team. Camp heights vary by season, and some plans place the final camp at about 4,900 to 5,000 m.

Day 8: summit day

The summit push starts in the dark, often around 2 to 3 am. The route climbs a rocky and snowy ridge to the broad summit dome, where the views extend over Langtang Lirung, Shishapangma and the Tibetan border ranges. You return to camp or continue down to Kyanjin Gompa the same day, depending on energy and weather.

Days 9 to 11: return

You descend through Langtang village, Lama Hotel and Syabrubesi and drive back to Kathmandu. Many plans keep one spare day before or after the summit for weather. This is not wasted time. It is what makes a safe and successful attempt more likely.

What to check in any Yala Peak itinerary

  • A true rest day at Kyanjin and a spare summit day.
  • Which camps are used and at what height you sleep before summit day.
  • Whether a guide with peak experience goes with you, not only a trek guide.
  • What the alternative is if the summit is too snowy or windy.
