Short Annapurna Base Camp trek: altitude and avalanche risk

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Annapurna Base Camp sits at about 4,130 m, lower than Everest Base Camp, but the final climb is steep and fast. A short plan makes that stretch even faster. Avalanche risk adds a second concern in the upper valley.

Altitude profile

Altitudes and walking times on this page are approximate and differ a little between maps, GPS devices and lodges. Treat them as planning figures, not survey data.

  • Chhomrong, about 2,170 m.
  • Himalaya, about 2,870 m.
  • Deurali, about 3,230 m.
  • Machhapuchhre Base Camp, about 3,700 m.
  • Annapurna Base Camp, about 4,130 m.

Why it can bite

Below 3,000 m most people feel well. Above it, the nightly gain should stay around 500 m. In a six-day plan, the step from Deurali to MBC and ABC is the main stress. Poor sleep and headaches are common at ABC.

Avalanche

The upper Sanctuary has avalanche-prone slopes after heavy snow, mostly in winter and early spring. Guides check the conditions and may delay or turn around. Follow their decision.

Weather

Autumn and spring give the most stable windows. Monsoon brings leeches and cloud. See best time for ABC.

Warning signs

Worsening headache, vomiting, loss of coordination or breathlessness at rest are reasons to descend. See health and safety quick answers.

How to reduce risk in a short plan

  • Sleep at Deurali and not higher on the first night above 3,000 m.
  • Start the final day early to avoid afternoon cloud.
  • Drink consistently and rest in the afternoon.
  • Tell your guide about any symptom at once.

Who should consider a longer plan

People who sleep badly at altitude, who have not been above 3,000 m before, or who are travelling in winter and early spring when snow adds uncertainty.

Common questions

Is ABC dangerous in a short plan?

It is manageable if you go slowly and watch for symptoms, but it has less margin.

When is avalanche risk highest?

After heavy snow, mostly in winter and early spring.

Where is the hard stretch?

Deurali to MBC and ABC.

Why the Annapurna sanctuary needs respect

Annapurna Base Camp sits near 4,130 m. The route between Deurali and the sanctuary crosses avalanche-prone slopes in winter and early spring. Guides check snow conditions and may delay or reroute. Never ignore warnings from local guides.
