A shorter Annapurna Base Camp trek suits some trekkers well and others poorly. If time is the main constraint, a different Annapurna trek can be a better choice than a compressed one.
Good fit
- Active walkers comfortable with steep stairs and long days.
- Anyone who has been above 3,500 m recently.
- Trekkers who can add a day if they feel off.
Better with more days
- First-time trekkers.
- People travelling with children or older parents.
- Those with heart, lung or blood conditions.
See ABC difficulty and fitness.
Shorter Annapurna alternatives
- Ghorepani and Poon Hill: 4 to 5 days. See the Poon Hill itinerary.
- Mardi Himal: 5 to 6 days. See Mardi Himal guides.

Choosing between shorter treks
Poon Hill gives a sunrise and a taste of the mountains in under a week. Mardi Himal gives a high ridge and close views of Machhapuchhre. ABC gives a complete Sanctuary experience. If you have six days or fewer, the first two are easier on the body.

Common questions
Is a short ABC trek good for beginners?
A 7 to 9-day plan is a gentler first trek.
What if I only have 5 days?
Poon Hill or Mardi Himal fit better.
Can I extend later?
Yes, by adding a spare day on the trail.
What you give up on a shorter plan
A compressed Annapurna Base Camp trek leaves less room for acclimatisation and weather. If a day is lost to rain or fatigue, you may have to skip something, so choose it only if your schedule truly requires it.
When to pick the longer route
If you want a relaxed pace, time to photograph, or you are travelling with older family members, the standard itinerary is kinder. The extra days cost little and add a lot of comfort.
Stay flexible
A shorter plan relies on good weather and early starts. If delays happen, accept an extra night rather than rushing.
