Ama Dablam climbing: season, difficulty and permits

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Ama Dablam is a serious technical climb and is not a trekking peak. It is usually climbed in March to May and October to November, needs a climbing permit, and suits experienced mountaineers with a good guide team.

A serious technical climb

Ama Dablam is much harder than a trekking peak. The route follows the south-west ridge with steep rock, ice and mixed terrain. It requires strong technical skills and previous experience.

Climbing season

Autumn, from October to November, is the main season, with spring also used. Weather is cold and winds can be strong.

Technical features

The Yellow Tower is a steep rock pitch, the Grey Tower a steep ridge and the final section is an exposed snow ridge. Fixed ropes are common but climbers must be competent.

Risks

Rockfall, falls, avalanche, cold and altitude are the main hazards. Crowding can cause delays in good weather.

Permit

A climbing permit is required through a registered agency. Rules and fees change.

The route in plain terms

The standard southwest ridge starts with easy scrambling from base camp, then climbs through three camps. Camp 1 sits on rock, Camp 2 on the ridge near the Yellow Tower, and Camp 3 beneath the hanging glacier. The Yellow Tower pitch is steep granite, and above Camp 2 there is a section of mixed rock and ice known as the Grey Tower. Fixed ropes are placed by the Sherpa team each season, but climbers must be able to move safely on them and handle the exposure.

Why autumn is popular

The post-monsoon months give the longest stable windows, with dry rock and cold nights that keep the snow hard. Spring is also used, but cloud and wind are more variable. Teams usually spend about four weeks on the mountain, including acclimatisation rotations. Permits are issued by the Ministry of Tourism through registered agencies, and fees change from year to year.
