A compact plan only works if it has slack at the ends. On the Circuit, the places where delays happen are the pass, the Jomsom airstrip and the road.
The pass
Heavy snow or high wind can close the Thorong La for a day. A guide will not push through unsafe conditions. Keep a spare day before the pass.
Jomsom flights
Flights from Jomsom run early because wind builds by late morning. Cloud or wind cancels them, and a backlog can follow. Have a backup: a jeep to Pokhara takes most of a day on rough roads.
Roads
Landslides can block the Besisahar road and the Kali Gandaki road, especially in and after the monsoon. Allow extra time.
How many spare days
- At least one before the pass.
- At least one after Jomsom before an onward flight.
- Two if travelling in shoulder months or early winter.
Seasons
The best months are March to May and October to November. See best time for Annapurna treks and monsoon and winter.
Reading the signs
Check the forecast from Manang. If snow is expected at the pass, wait. A day of waiting in Manang is much better than a hard turnaround from High Camp.
Flexibility in the plan
Most companies will rearrange lodges and flights if you decide early. Let your guide know your final deadline so he can plan the options.
Common questions
How many spare days do I need?
At least two spread across the trip, one near the pass and one at the end.
What if the Jomsom flight is cancelled?
Take a jeep or wait for the next day.
Can the pass close?
Yes, after heavy snow or in strong winds.
Pass day conditions
Thorong La can close after snowfall or in strong wind. Your guide will decide whether to cross, and you should accept the call even if it costs a day.
Spare days at both ends
Add a spare day in Kathmandu before international flights home. The Jomsom flight and road conditions can shift your schedule.
Thorong La timing
The pass is crossed early in the morning, when winds are lighter. Weather can close it, so a buffer day at Manang or Thorong Phedi is wise.
