Annapurna treks: quick answers for planning

4 min read

Where do most Annapurna treks start?

Most routes begin from Pokhara, the lakeside city, either by road to a trailhead or by a short flight for treks on the western side.

How many days do I need for a short Annapurna trek?

A Poon Hill walk can be done in about four to five days. Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp need longer. See our itinerary pages for details.

Do I need a guide for Annapurna treks?

On the listed Annapurna routes, including the Circuit, Poon Hill to Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal and Khopra, a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card are required.

Can I do the Annapurna Circuit in one go?

Yes, with enough days for acclimatisation. Many people also use vehicles for some sections to shorten the trip.

Should I book accommodation in advance?

Your operator typically arranges this, which is helpful in busy months such as October. Lodges generally do not take card bookings from individuals.

How large should a group be?

A small group of two to eight is easy to manage in teahouses. Larger groups need advance room planning.

Can I combine Annapurna with a Kathmandu or Chitwan trip?

Yes. Many travellers combine a trek with sightseeing in Kathmandu and wildlife in Chitwan. Allow buffer days before an international flight.

Is Pokhara a good place to rest after the trek?

Yes. The lake, cafes and views make it a relaxed place to unwind, shop and wash everything before the journey home.

How far ahead should I book?

For October and April, a couple of months is sensible. Off-season bookings can be made with shorter notice.

Can I extend a trek if I feel good?

Often yes, with some flexibility in your plan. Tell your guide early so lodging and permits can be adjusted.

How do I choose between Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and Annapurna Base Camp?

Start with the number of days you have and your experience. Poon Hill is the shortest and gentlest and suits beginners and families. Mardi Himal takes a little longer and offers high ridge views and a quieter trail. Annapurna Base Camp needs more days and rewards you with the dramatic amphitheatre of the Sanctuary. If you are uncertain, ask your operator for a comparison based on your dates, and choose the trek that leaves a few spare days rather than the longest one you can squeeze in.

What kind of hotel should I book in Pokhara?

Most trekkers choose a simple hotel near the lake, which makes it easy to find restaurants, shops and transport. Check that the hotel can store your extra luggage and arrange early breakfasts or packed lunches if needed. In busy seasons, book well in advance, and ask your operator whether they have a preferred hotel that suits the schedule.

Can I trek during festivals or public holidays?

Yes, but expect crowds and higher prices on transport and lodges, especially during major autumn festivals and during Indian holiday periods. Book early, be flexible with dates and ask your operator how they handle the rush. Some villages hold celebrations that are a wonderful cultural experience, and the extra atmosphere may be a benefit if you plan for it.

Is it possible to trek with a baby or a toddler?

It is not usually recommended on high routes, because young children cannot tell you how they feel and altitude affects them. Short, low-altitude walks near Pokhara are better, with easy access to medical help. If you want to bring a young child, discuss it with a doctor and choose a route with a short drive and low maximum height.

What if I need to leave the trek early?

Tell your guide as soon as you decide, so that transport can be arranged. Depending on the location, you may be able to take a vehicle or a short flight back, or you might walk down with an assistant. Ask your operator in advance about the cost and who pays for the extra arrangements, and check whether insurance covers them.
