Best time for the Australian Camp trek

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Australian Camp can be visited most of the year, but the clearest views are from October to April. The monsoon brings cloud and leeches.

Open most of the year, best in the dry months

Australian Camp is low and mild, so it can be visited in most months. The deciding factor is visibility, because the main attraction is the mountain panorama.

Winter: December to February

Clear, cool, dry days with the sharpest views. Mornings can be chilly, but conditions for photography are excellent. This is the most reliable time.

Spring: March to May

Warm days, flowering shrubs and a hazy horizon in the afternoon. Mornings are still often clear.

Autumn: October and November

Clear skies after the monsoon and comfortable temperatures. The trail is busier.

Monsoon: June to September

Clouds hide the mountains for most of the day, and leeches appear on the trail. Not recommended for views.

Daily weather pattern

Mornings are typically clear and afternoons cloudy, so sunrise is the best time to see the range. In winter the pattern is more stable, with clear days. In spring and autumn expect some haze by midday.

What to wear

Mornings can be cold, around five to ten degrees in winter, so carry a fleece and windproof layer. Days are mild and sunny. A light rain jacket is advisable at any time of year.

Choosing a month

If you want the most reliable sunrise, go in November, December or January. If you want warm days, go in March or April. If you want fewer visitors, go in the first half of February. Avoid July and August unless you accept cloud and leeches.

Cold mornings

Even in spring the ridge can be cool at dawn. A light jacket, hat and gloves are enough. In winter a warm down jacket is needed.

How to choose

For views choose November to January. For flowers choose March. See the difficulty guide.
