How hard is the Australian Camp trek?

4 min readUpdated 24 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Australian Camp is an easy trek. The climb is two to three hours, the height is only about 2,060 m and altitude is not a concern. It suits most fitness levels.

Easy

Australian Camp is one of the easiest overnight treks in Nepal. The ascent from Kande is about 500 m over two to three hours on a clear path, mostly through forest, with some stone steps.

Altitude

At around 2,060 m there is no risk of altitude sickness.

Fitness

Anyone who can walk uphill for a couple of hours will manage. Children as young as six or seven can walk it with breaks.

Safety

Wear sturdy shoes and carry water. Leeches appear in the monsoon.

Practical tips

Start early to avoid the heat on the lower trail, and carry at least a litre of water. Wear shoes with good grip because the path can be slippery after rain. A walking pole helps on the stone steps.

Who can do it

Children, older travellers and first-time trekkers can all manage this route if they go at their own pace. There are tea stops on the way for rests.

What the path is like

The trail from Kande is a mix of stone steps and dirt path through forest. It is well used and has teahouses at intervals. In the monsoon the surface becomes slippery and leeches appear, so shoes with good grip and socks that cover the ankle are useful. After dry spells the path can be dusty. The final stretch is a gentle rise to the open ridge.

Who might find it harder

Visitors with knee or hip problems may find the stone steps tiring, and anyone who starts late in the day will be walking in the heat. Take your time, carry water and rest when you need to. The reward is a view that most people feel is out of proportion to the effort.

Common questions

  • Can older people do it? Yes with a slow pace.
  • Do I need a guide? Not required, but helpful.
  • Is there altitude sickness? No, the height is too low.
