Bhairab Kunda and Gosainkunda are both sacred high lakes in the hills north of Kathmandu, and both are pilgrimage sites. Gosainkunda is on the much more used Langtang trail with lodges along the route, while Bhairab Kunda is reached by a less-developed route with camping at the lake.
Two pilgrimage lakes
Both lakes draw Hindu pilgrims at Janai Purnima, and both are linked with Shiva. Bhairab Kunda is dedicated to Bhairav, a fierce form of Shiva.
Access
Gosainkunda is reached from the Langtang and Helambu side and has an established trail. See the Gosainkunda Lake trek guides. Bhairab Kunda is reached from Jalbire or Barhabise in Sindhupalchok. See the itinerary.
Facilities
Gosainkunda has lodges along its main route. At Bhairab Kunda there are only temporary shelters during the fair, so most itineraries camp.
Which to choose
Choose Gosainkunda for a well-trodden route with lodges. Choose Bhairab Kunda if you want a less-used trail and are happy to camp. Both need care at altitude.
Other options nearby
See the Helambu trek guides and the Langtang trek guides for gentler routes in the same hills.
