Bhairab Kunda is a moderate to challenging trek with long climbs, less-maintained trails and a high camp at about 4,250 m. The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), and the Janai Purnima fair in July or August is the busiest time at the lake.
Permits
Operators list a local rural municipality entry permit and a TIMS card. Some also mention a Langtang National Park permit, and sources disagree on which applies. Ask your agency in writing which permits it has arranged for your dates.
Difficulty
The trek is described as moderate to challenging. Daily walking is about 3 to 7 hours. The trails are less used than on the main Langtang or Everest routes, with steep sections, and no technical climbing is needed.
Altitude
The climb from the villages to the lake is large. Take the rest day, sleep low when you can, and go down if symptoms get worse. Do not rely on claims that altitude sickness is not a risk here.
Seasons
Spring and autumn are best. The monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain, slippery trails and road blockages, and winter is cold with snow at higher altitude. The fair in July or August falls in the monsoon, so go prepared for rain.
Guides
Take a guide who knows the route, since the trail is less used and less marked than the popular treks.
