Cholatse climbing: difficulty, permits and the team you need

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Climbing Cholatse is a serious alpine undertaking. It involves steep ice, mixed rock and a narrow ridge, and it needs real mountaineering skill. It is not suitable for beginners or for people who have only done a trekking peak. Climbers should arrange permits through a registered agency.

The climbing

Teams usually climb from a high camp on the glacier, then up steep snow and ice towards the ridge and summit. There is exposure, and the weather can change quickly. Technical skills such as ice axe and crampon work, rope handling and rescue are essential.

Experience required

Climbers normally need previous experience on technical alpine routes and on high peaks. A common path is to climb a trekking peak first, then step up to a steeper objective. Training courses can help.

Permits

A climbing permit is needed, and the details depend on the peak list and the rules in force. Ask your agency to confirm the permit, the royalty and the liaison requirements before you plan dates, because rules and fees can change.

Support and safety

A climbing team normally has an experienced leader, a guide, a cook and porters. Carry insurance that covers climbing at this altitude and helicopter rescue. Agree a turnaround time and keep to it.

Acclimatisation

Spend several nights above 4,500 m before the summit push. A trek through Namche, Dingboche and Dzongla is a natural way to prepare. See acclimatisation days on the Everest route.

A step-up objective

If you are not yet ready, consider Lobuche East as a stepping stone. See the Lobuche Peak guides.

Common questions

Is Cholatse harder than Island Peak? Yes, in general, because it is steeper and more technical. Do I need a guide? Yes, with a qualified leader. How long is the trip? Plan for three to four weeks including acclimatisation and spare days.

Equipment

Expect to carry or hire technical gear: harness, helmet, crampons, ice axes, ropes and a good set of snow and ice protection. Your agency will provide a gear list.

Weather windows

Short, stable windows can close fast. Keep spare days in the plan and be ready to wait.
