Best time for Damodar Kunda: autumn, spring and the pilgrim season

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

The high lakes are accessible only in a limited window, and pilgrim traffic follows its own calendar.

Autumn

September to early November is the most reliable window for trekkers.

Spring

Late April to May can work, but snow may linger at the highest points.

Pilgrim season

Hindu pilgrims visit around the August full moon, in the monsoon. Mustang lies in the rain shadow, but conditions can still be wet and cold. If you want to witness the pilgrimage, ask your operator about the specific plan and risks.

Winter

Not feasible for standard trekkers.

Why the dates matter

The window is narrow because high passes and campsites are affected by snow, wind and cold. In autumn, post-monsoon skies are clearer and the ground drier. In spring, snow lingers longer. In midsummer, rain shadow effects help, but the pilgrimage season brings crowds and unpredictable weather.

A note on pilgrim crowds

If you travel during the pilgrim period, expect more people, noise and activity at the lake, and ask your guide about etiquette. If you prefer solitude, choose autumn.

Booking early

Because this is a specialist trek, plan several months ahead. Permits, crew and logistics take time to arrange.

Month-by-month for the high lakes

  • April: snow on the highest sections; usually too early.
  • May: possible in some years, with unsettled afternoons.
  • June to August: pilgrim period and monsoon edge; unpredictable.
  • September: improving, with some leftover monsoon cloud.
  • October: the most reliable window for trekkers.
  • November: cold, short days, early snow possible.
  • December to March: not feasible.

Common questions

When do pilgrims visit?

Commonly around the August full moon festival.

When is best for trekkers?

Autumn is the most reliable.

Can I go in winter?

No, it is not feasible.

Why timing matters for a remote trek

Few facilities exist in this region, so bad weather can leave you short of options. Choose the season carefully and carry extra supplies.

Dates that suit pilgrims

Local festivals attract pilgrims, which brings more activity on the trail. Check dates with your operator to avoid surprises.

Altitude and cold

The lake is at about 4,900 m, so nights are cold even in good seasons. Pack warm gear and plan for acclimatisation.
