Damodar Kunda route and itinerary: a typical plan

3 min readUpdated 23 Oct 2026By the Base Camp Hikes trek team

Itineraries vary by operator, but one published outline shows the shape. It runs through Upper Mustang to the lake and returns toward Muktinath. Altitudes are approximate, and your operator will confirm the exact plan.

A typical outline

Use the numbers below to plan, not to measure. Maps, watches and lodge boards rarely agree to the metre.

  1. Fly Pokhara to Jomsom, walk to Kagbeni (about 2,800 m).
  2. Kagbeni to Chele (about 3,100 m).
  3. Chele to Giling (about 3,700 m).
  4. Giling to Ghami (about 3,500 m).
  5. Ghami to Tsarang (about 3,500 m).
  6. Tsarang to Lo Manthang (about 3,800 to 4,300 m depending on route), with a rest day.
  7. Lo Manthang to Yara (about 3,900 m).
  8. Yara to a high camp near Bas Khola (about 5,000 m).
  9. High camp to Damodar Kunda (about 5,000 to 5,200 m), with a rest day.
  10. Return over high ground and descend via Ghechung Khola and Tange to Tetang and Muktinath.
  11. Muktinath to Jomsom and onward.

Rest days and weather

Rest days at Lo Manthang and at the lake are essential. A spare day or two is wise. Weather and snow can block the route.

Camping and food

Expect tented camps and carried food on the highest sections. A support team, including cook and porters, is typical.

Alternative exits

Some plans exit via different valleys depending on conditions. Ask your operator about fallback options.

Why the schedule includes rest days

The itinerary climbs from about 2,800 m to around 5,000 m over roughly two weeks, with rest days at Lo Manthang and the lake. These pauses are not optional extras; they are how the body adapts. Skipping them is the quickest route to altitude illness.

Food, fuel and crew

Camping sections need cooks, kitchen staff, tents, fuel and porters. This is why costs are high. Ask your operator how much food and fuel are carried, what happens if supplies run low, and how the crew is equipped for cold nights.

A realistic mindset

Weather and snow can alter plans. Flexibility is essential. A group that accepts delays and changes will have a better experience than one that insists on a fixed schedule.
