The Dhaulagiri Circuit is best in April to May and October to early November, when passes are more likely to be clear of fresh snow. Winter closes the high sections and the monsoon makes the approach wet.
Two preferred windows
The cleanest weather for the circuit is the pre-monsoon (March to May) and the autumn (September to early December). Both seasons give clear skies at altitude, although the passes can hold snow and the weather turns cold.
Spring, March to May
Late spring is popular: the lower valley is green, the rhododendrons bloom, and the passes are usually passable by May. Early spring has more snow on the passes and colder nights.
Autumn, September to early December
Stable weather and clear views. October is the safest month. By November the nights at the high camps are bitterly cold.
Monsoon and winter
From June to August the lower trail is wet and leeches and landslides are a risk, and visibility is poor. In winter the passes are heavily snowed and the trek is only for experienced mountaineers.
Reading the season
The pre-monsoon period offers warmer weather but also more afternoon cloud and snow showers on the passes, while the post-monsoon autumn brings colder, drier and more stable days. Many experienced leaders prefer late April and early May or the first half of October, when the weather windows are longest.
What the crew will check
Before a pass day, the guide checks the forecast, the snow condition on the glacier and the physical condition of the group. A delay of a day or two is normal. Be prepared to wait rather than force a crossing in bad weather.
Clear weather windows
On this route the glacier and the passes decide when you can go. In spring, the snow is deep early in the season and softens later. In autumn, the snow base is thinner and the nights are colder. Many guides choose a window around early May or the first half of October.
What to bring in each season
In spring bring sun protection, because the glare on snow is strong, together with a warm hat for nights. In autumn pack a warmer sleeping bag, since camps at 4,700 m reach minus fifteen at night.
Choosing a date
For safety choose late April to May or October. Always plan weather days on both sides of the passes. See the difficulty guide.
