You need trekking permits arranged through a registered agency, and most groups use a camping crew. Fees and rules are revised, so confirm them when planning. The trek starts near Beni or Darbang and ends in the Kali Gandaki valley.
Permits
The circuit passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area and requires its permit, and also a TIMS card. The route enters areas that may require additional trekking or restricted-area permits, so confirm with your operator for the season you plan. Fees change, so we provide current figures when you enquire.
Camping style
Most operators run the trek as a camping trip with a guide, cook, kitchen crew and porters, since lodges are scarce above the early days. Some operators list a few teahouse nights at the start and end.
Getting to the start
The usual route is a drive from Pokhara to Beni. The road is rough and the journey takes several hours. At the end, fly from Jomsom to Pokhara or drive.
Equipment
Carry a good four-season sleeping bag, warm clothing, sturdy boots, sun protection and, on pass days, microspikes or crampons as advised. Operators often supply tents and mats.
Food and water
The cook team prepares meals, and water is purified. Bring snacks, electrolyte powder and a high-calorie reserve.
Communication
Mobile signal is almost absent above the first villages. Operators may carry a satellite phone for emergencies.
Insurance and evacuation
Your travel insurance must cover trekking up to 5,500 m and helicopter evacuation. Carry the policy number and the insurer's emergency contact. Operators can arrange the helicopter, but the cost is high, so insurance is essential.
Leave no trace
Camps are in wild areas, so toilets are pit or portable. Carry out all rubbish and use biodegradable soap well away from streams. Fuel is carried in, not cut from the forest.

Planning the long approach
The Dhaulagiri circuit is a serious expedition with remote camps. Transport to the start is by road, and teams carry food and tents. Confirm porter support and weather buffers before you commit.
Camping logistics
The circuit requires a full camping crew, fixed lines on the French Pass and careful weather planning.
