The classic route to Everest Base Camp goes up the Imja valley through Tengboche and Dingboche. The Gokyo route goes up the neighbouring Dudh Koshi valley to the turquoise Gokyo Lakes first. It is longer and higher in places, but it gives a better acclimatisation profile and some of the best views in the region.
Two ways to link Gokyo and base camp
- Over the Cho La. From Gokyo cross the Cho La pass (about 5,420 m) to Dzongla, then join the main trail at Lobuche. Shortest, but it includes a glacier crossing.
- Back down and up. Return from Gokyo to Namche, then follow the standard route. Adds two or three days but avoids the pass.
How many days
A Gokyo and base camp trek usually takes 14 to 16 days from Lukla to Lukla, depending on rest days and the route. See the itinerary.
What you gain
- The six Gokyo lakes, which are among the highest freshwater lake systems in the world.
- Gokyo Ri (about 5,357 m), with a wide view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu.
- Fewer people on the trail in the first week.
- More time at altitude before base camp, which helps acclimatisation.
What it demands
- More days, more cost and more weather exposure.
- A real pass crossing if you go over the Cho La.
- Higher sleeping altitudes at Gokyo (about 4,790 m).
How it compares
The Gokyo route is not simply a longer base camp trek; it is a different trek. See Everest Base Camp vs Gokyo vs Three Passes and our Gokyo guides.
