Flying to Lukla: what to expect

4 min read

For most trekkers, the journey to Everest Base Camp begins with a short mountain flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla, at about 2,860 m. The flight itself takes a little over half an hour from Kathmandu, and the approach to a short sloping runway is one of the memorable parts of the trip.

How the flight works

Small turboprop aircraft carry around a dozen to twenty passengers. Because the valley clouds up in the late morning, flights depart in the early part of the day, and the return flights from Lukla follow the same pattern. If cloud or wind keeps aircraft on the ground, the day is simply lost and passengers are rebooked.

The Kathmandu and Ramechhap question

In the busiest months, a share of the Lukla flights have operated from Ramechhap, also called Manthali, rather than Kathmandu, to ease congestion at the capital airport. This means a road transfer of several hours, often starting in the middle of the night. Check with your operator which airport applies to your date, because the arrangement has changed between seasons.

Baggage

Domestic flights have strict weight limits, usually modest, and they are enforced because of the altitude and the short runway. Pack a duffel for the trail and leave non-essential items at your Kathmandu hotel. Keep your valuables, medication, and warm layers in your daypack, because checked bags can travel separately and arrive later.

Tips for the day

  • Arrive at the airport early, with your passport and permit papers accessible.
  • Wear layers, because it can be cool when you land.
  • Sit on the right-hand side heading in if you want a good view, though the sides vary by aircraft.
  • Eat a light breakfast and carry some water.

Safety and regulation

Nepali aviation authorities regulate mountain flying, and pilots on this route are specially experienced. Weather is the main limit, not an optional risk to be argued with. If a flight is cancelled, accept it and use the delay productively rather than pressing for a risky alternative.

The morning of the flight

Departure day usually starts very early. Your operator will tell you what time to leave the hotel, and you travel to the domestic terminal, check in your duffel bag and wait in a small, crowded hall. Do not be surprised if the departure time changes several times. Pilots wait for clear conditions on the Lukla side, and flights are often launched in a rush when a window opens. Keep your passport, permits and a snack in your daypack, and be ready to leave at short notice.

What the flight is like

The aircraft are small, with seating for around a dozen to twenty passengers, and the flight crosses forested ridges before the mountains appear on the right. The landing on a short, sloping runway ending in a wall is dramatic but is performed daily by experienced pilots. Some passengers love it and some find it nerve-wracking, so a window seat for views and a calm mind help. Afterwards you walk out through the small terminal into the busy town of Lukla.

First hours at Lukla

Your guide will arrange breakfast or tea, meet the porters and sort the bags. Take the time to adjust your boots, apply sunscreen and sip water before leaving. The first day is a gentle descent to Phakding, which gives your body a gentle start. Use it to find your rhythm, because the climbing begins soon after.

Good habits for flight days

  • Wear your warmest layers in the bag or on your body, because baggage can be delayed.
  • Keep medicines, glasses, documents and a charger in your daypack.
  • Be flexible with the day. Delays are common and not a sign of poor organisation.
  • Be kind to staff at the terminal. Everyone is working under pressure.
