How hard is the Everest View trek?

2 min read

The Everest View trek is one of the easier ways to experience the Khumbu. It is short, the highest sleeping point is only about 3,900 m and the daily walking is moderate. It is still a mountain trek, with steep sections, long suspension bridges, cold nights and altitude that affects some people. It suits beginners with reasonable fitness and the right preparation.

What is easy about it

  • Short walking days, typically three to six hours.
  • Comfortable lodges at each stop.
  • A lower maximum height than most Himalayan treks.
  • A well-marked trail with plenty of other trekkers and guides.

What is hard about it

The climb from the river to Namche is steep and takes about two to three hours. The walk up to the Everest View Hotel and Khumjung includes a steady climb. Altitude above 3,000 m can cause headaches, tiredness and poor sleep, even in people who are fit. The return from Tengboche to Namche involves a steep descent and climb, which can tire knees.

Fitness that helps

You do not need special training, but regular walking, stair climbing and some hill hikes in the weeks before you go make a big difference. Aim to be able to walk four to five hours with a daypack and enjoy it.

Who it suits

The trek suits first-time trekkers, families with older children, older travellers who are in good health and anyone who wants Everest views without a long expedition. Check with a doctor if you have heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, or if you are pregnant.

Altitude still matters

Even a short trek reaches heights where symptoms can occur. Walk slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol on the first nights and tell your guide how you feel. Keep a spare day and good insurance, and do not push on if you feel ill.
