A simple Ghandruk trip takes two to three days. Drive to Nayapul or Kimche, walk up to Ghandruk, stay a night or two and return.
Three ways to do it
Because Ghandruk is so accessible, you can design anything from a single overnight to a three-day walk with onward connections. The right choice depends on how much time you have and how much you want to walk. Heights and timings below are approximate.
Option 1: a two-day overnight from Pokhara
Drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, about 1.5 hours, then walk the stone path through Birethanti and up the Modi Khola gorge to Ghandruk in about five or six hours of walking, or take a jeep part of the way from Kimche. Spend the night, explore the museum and lanes the next morning, and return the same way. This is the easiest introduction to teahouse life in Nepal.
Option 2: three days with a circular return
Walk up on day one, spend a full day exploring and take a morning walk to the viewpoints and monastery on day two, then continue to Kimche or Landruk by a different trail on day three. This gives you more time for photography and conversation with villagers.
Option 3: continue to Tadapani and Ghorepani
Beyond Ghandruk a steep forest trail climbs to Tadapani at around 2,630 m, a four to five hour walk through rhododendron forest. From there you can walk to Ghorepani and Poon Hill. This is the usual route for the loop. See the loop itinerary.
Option 4: a side trip to Jhinu Danda
Experienced walkers sometimes add a day to descend to the hot springs at Jhinu Danda, at about 1,780 m, which lie on the way to the Annapurna Base Camp route. The path drops steeply and returns the same way.
What to see on a rest day
If you have time, visit the Gurung museum, walk to the hilltop viewpoint, and take tea at a local house. You can also visit the school, buy local handicrafts and watch farm work in the terraces.
Packing for a short trip
A small day pack, a warm layer, rain jacket, sun hat and sturdy shoes are enough. Many people leave heavier luggage at the Pokhara hotel.
Timing the day
Start walking early to avoid the afternoon heat on the lower trail, and plan to arrive in the village with time to enjoy the evening light. Ask your lodge about the next day's weather before setting off.
