A typical Gokyo Ri plan takes about 12 to 14 days from Kathmandu. After Lukla you walk to Namche, rest, follow the Dudh Kosi valley to Gokyo in about four days, climb Gokyo Ri on the second morning, and return the same way.
Lukla to Namche
Fly to Lukla and walk to Phakding, then Namche Bazaar at about 3,440 m. Spend a rest day in Namche, with a short walk higher, such as to the Everest View Hotel area.
Namche to Dole and Machhermo
The side route leaves the main trail above Namche and climbs through forest to Dole, at about 4,040 m, and then to Machhermo, around 4,470 m. These days are shorter, because the altitude gain is steady.
Machhermo to Gokyo
The trail passes the first and second lakes before reaching Gokyo village beside the third lake, around 4,790 m. It is a short but high day, so arrive early to rest.
Climb Gokyo Ri
Start before dawn on the second morning, when the air is calm and the views are clearest. The climb takes two to three hours up and about an hour down. Many groups then rest in the afternoon or walk to the fourth lake.
The return
Most groups return along the same valley and fly out of Lukla, which takes about three to four days. Add a spare day for weather, because flight delays are common.
Spare days
Add one or two spare days for weather or for feeling tired at altitude. A good plan leaves room to rest rather than racing the clock.
Walking times
Expect four to six hours on most walking days, and shorter days above Dole. The climb of Gokyo Ri takes two to three hours up, so you will be back for breakfast or lunch. Do not plan long side trips on the same day.
Rest and weather days
A rest day in Gokyo is better spent with a short, gentle walk than lying in bed. Cloud often builds by midday, so rest early in the day if the weather is poor and try again the next morning.
