Both are rewarding. Kala Patthar, at about 5,550 m, is higher and puts you close to Everest and the Khumbu Glacier. Gokyo Ri, at about 5,350 m, gives a wider view of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu, with lakes below and far fewer people.
Height
Kala Patthar is about 200 m higher, which makes it the harder day. Gokyo Ri is lower and slightly easier, though still demanding.
The view
Kala Patthar gives a close, direct view of Everest. Gokyo Ri shows a broader range and the lakes. Many trekkers prefer the Gokyo view for photographs.
Crowds
Kala Patthar is busy at sunrise in the season. Gokyo Ri is quieter.
Combining them
The Everest Base Camp and Gokyo route links both, usually with a Cho La crossing. It takes about 16 to 18 days.
Which to choose
If you want a close look at Everest and the classic experience, choose Kala Patthar. If you want a quieter trek with lakes and a wide view, choose Gokyo Ri. If you have time, do both.
Weather and light
Gokyo Ri is often clear early in the morning, with cloud building up later. Kala Patthar is best at sunrise or sunset. Both need a warm layer and early start.
Questions people ask first
Is one safer? Not really, both are high and cold. Can I do both? Yes, on a combined route. Which gives better photos? Many prefer Gokyo for the lakes and the wide view.
